Senior Cost Accountant

The Senior Cost Accountant will be responsible for all aspects of accounting for inventories in our Minnesota location. Responsibilities include establishment, analysis and maintenance of standard costs, monthly variance analysis, monthly reconciliations, and assistance with budgeting, planning, and forecasting of inventory and cost of goods sold. In addition, the Senior Cost Accountant will be responsible for project cost accounting, which includes tracking and accounting for external costs and internal labor associated with internal development projects and revenue generating development projects with customers.


  • Establish standard costs and update as appropriate
  • Review and analyze depreciation, labor and overhead rates and allocations and suggest policy and/or process improvements
  • Develop comprehensive understanding and assume complete responsibility for accounting process flows from the manufacturing operations through general ledger entries
  • Conduct inventory reserve analysis on a quarterly basis and generate reports for management
  • Perform gross margin analysis and analyze purchase price and manufacturing variances
  • Analyze costs of raw materials and other supplies, and create cost-benefit analyses for changing vendors
  • Analyze actual manufacturing costs and prepare periodic reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs
  • Maintain cost accounting system
  • Calculate cost estimates for new and proposed products
  • Provide management with reports specifying and comparing factors affecting prices and profitability of products or services
  • Reconcile inventory accounts on a monthly basis
  • Coordinate annual physical inventory and cycle counts
  • Generate project cost reports and determine costs to be deferred and costs to be recognized against development revenue
  • Maintain project cost tracking system and methods
  • Prepare monthly journal entries manually or through electronic creation utilizing ERP system
  • Complete ad hoc projects as directed by senior management


In addtion to the necessary skills and experience to perform the responsibilities outlined above, there are a number of traits that a successful candidate will possess.


  • 5-7+ years of cost accounting in a manufacturing environment
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting
  • CMA and/or CPA preferred
  • Must have a strong cost systems background and have excellent analytical skills
  • Sound understanding of US GAAP
  • Experience with SOX controls and documentation in a publicly held company preferred
  • Strong Excel skills
